Chapter 12

Connie, Elyse, and Stephanie sat in silence after Cassie gave them the news.

“Are you still there?” Cassie asked.

“Sorry,” Stephanie said. “We’re here. I guess we’re processing the news.”

“It looks like our theory was correct,” Connie said. "Between the time Andrea left her house at 8:00 on Monday morning until she met up with Jason for their kayaking date at 9:00, somebody gained access to her coffee and poisoned her.”

“That explains why Jason didn’t get sick,” Stephanie said.

“But how would the killer have gained access to Cassie’s Norpramin?” Elyse asked. “People usually keep their medications in their medicine cabinet or their nightstand.”

“That makes Cathy look even more suspicious,” Stephanie said. “She probably stole a bottle of pills while she was cleaning Andrea’s bathroom.”

“Not necessarily,” Cassie said. “I happen to know that Andrea kept her prescription in her purse. She would sometimes forget to take it in the morning, so she got in the habit of carrying it in with her. That way she could take it as soon as she remembered.”

“Whoever killed her must have known that,” Elyse said. “But that could be any one of our suspects – Calvin, Jeremy, Cathy. Anyone could have dumped the bottle of Norpramin, or a good portion of it, into her coffee.”

“Don’t forget Tori,” Cassie said. “Her sweatshirt was in Andrea’s office, so she was likely searching Andrea’s emails the night of her death.”

“And if Andrea went into Tori’s house on Monday before she went kayaking, then Tori had access to Andrea’s coffee and pills, as well,” Connie said.

“This seems to vindicate Nate,” Elyse said. “Since they only met once or twice, he likely wouldn’t have known that she took Norpramin.”

“That’s true,” Connie said. “But then again, the museum was broken into, and the letter was stolen containing his family’s secret just after she was killed. I’m not sure how he could have done it, but he has the strongest motive. I say we keep him on the list.”

“We should go and talk to Cathy so we can figure out what their 7:45 AM meeting was about. We should also talk to Shannon again sometime soon. Maybe she can shed some light on whether Andrea left her coffee and purse unattended at any time while Calvin and/or Jeremy were around.”

“And don’t forget, we need to talk to Nate,” Cassie said.

Connie ran a hand through her hair. “Right. I don’t know how we’ll manage that.”

“I’ll see if I can think of something,” Cassie said. “Let me know how it goes with Cathy.”

“Will do,” Stephanie said. Then she disconnected the call and drove the women to Cathy’s house.

When they arrived at Cathy’s, they knocked on her door. She answered right away, but disappointment spread across her face when she saw Connie, Stephanie, and Elyse.

“Hi,” Stephanie said. “We’re sorry to stop by unannounced, but something has come up in our investigation, and we needed to ask you a couple more questions.”

“I already told you and the police everything I know. I don’t have time right now. Please excuse me.
